OUR RIDES 2011
January Ride

Jan 8th - Cabrillo National Monument, Pt. Loma Lighthouse

The Old Point Loma Lighthouse stood watch over the entrance to San Diego Bay for 36 years. At dusk on November 15, 1855, the light keeper climbed the winding stairs and lit the light for the first time. What seemed to be a good location 422 feet above sea level, however, had a serious flaw. Fog and low clouds often obscured the light. On March 23, 1891, the light was extinguished and the keeper moved to a new lighthouse location closer to the water at the tip of the Point. Today, the Old Point Loma Lighthouse still stands watch over San Diego, sentinel to a vanished past. The National Park Service has refurbished the interior to its historic 1880s appearance - a reminder of a bygone era. Ranger-led talks, displays, and brochures are available to explain the lighthouse’s interesting past.

The peak, which marks a boundary between San Bernardino County and Los Angeles County[7] is called Baldy because of the absence of trees around the summit. The Tongva tribe call the mountain Yoát or Joat, which means snow, and the Mohave call it Avii Kwatiinyam.

Approximately 125 miles round trip.

November Ride

Nov 5th - Mulholland Highway

"This is an excellent piece of roadway that has nice sweeping turns as well as a few twists thrown in for good measure. The road surface is in good condition in the summer. In the winter months it can have a little bit of sand and rocks from the rain but is still very well maintained. You can either continue on Mulholland Hwy to the SR 23 to SR 1 or take the long sweepers of Encinal Canyon Rd to SR 1. The highlight of the road other than the spectacular views and road conditions is The Rock Store. On Sundays The Rock Store draws all kinds of motorcycles from classic to sport from all over LA and Ventura county. There is often times many sightings of Jay Leno and other famous motorcycle enthusiasts as well as a live band on most summer Sundays."
